GoodYear wins every shared test — more grip in the wet, more range on a tank.
The GoodYear UltraGrip 9+ and the Pirelli Cinturato Winter occupy similar ground on paper — both are premium winter tyres aimed at compact and small family cars, covering R14 to R16 or R17 rims. But their characters diverge in meaningful ways. The GoodYear is the all-rounder: consistently safe across wet, dry, and snow with standout wet grip and aquaplaning resistance. The Pirelli, developed specifically for urban winter mobility according to its own positioning, leans harder into snow cornering and comfort — but gives up ground in wet braking efficiency and long-term running costs. In three mutual tests, the UltraGrip 9+ finished ahead every time, including a significant gap in the Autobild 2021 mega-test where it placed 6th against the Cinturato Winter's 27th from 50 tyres.

GoodYear Efficientgrip Performance 2This is where the UltraGrip 9+ pulls decisively ahead. In the one shared test with measured braking distances — Autobild 2021 on 205/55 R16 — the GoodYear stopped from speed in 35.2m on wet versus the Cinturato Winter's 37.3m, a gap of over two metres that is both statistically and practically significant. The GoodYear's wet score of 85 versus 78.7 for the Pirelli tells the same story. Aquaplaning resistance is close — the GoodYear edges it crossways (93 vs 87.9) while the Pirelli counters with stronger longitudinal aquaplaning (92.9 vs 87.3) — but in overall wet handling confidence, the UltraGrip 9+ is the safer choice. Real owners back this up, with wet grip consistently among the most mentioned positives in customer reviews.

GoodYear Efficientgrip Performance 2On dry roads, neither tyre is a standout performer, but the gap between them is real. The UltraGrip 9+ carries a dry performance score of 76 and earns praise for safe, composed dry behaviour — though testers have flagged mild imprecision in steering response, a minor but recurring observation. The Cinturato Winter scores 73.7 on dry, and its dry-braking score of 73.9 is actually slightly stronger than the GoodYear's 69.8 — a result backed by its squared footprint design, which Pirelli engineered specifically to maximise dry grip pressure distribution. In practice, the Cinturato Winter feels planted on dry tarmac for urban use, but neither tyre is designed for dynamic dry handling, and both behave accordingly at higher speeds.

GoodYear Efficientgrip Performance 2The Cinturato Winter is the more comfortable tyre by most measures: it scores 79 on comfort versus 76 for the GoodYear, and low noise is the single most mentioned quality in customer reviews — cited 20 times among owners. The UltraGrip 9+ is no harder ride, but comfort is not its defining strength. Where the gap grows significantly is in running costs: the GoodYear scores 80.3 on rolling resistance and 74.7 on mileage — both well above the Cinturato Winter's 61.3 and 64.8 respectively. The GoodYear was the most fuel-efficient tyre in ADAC's 2022 test, and its projected tread life is meaningfully longer. For drivers covering regular distances, that efficiency advantage over a full winter season adds up. It is also worth noting that the Pirelli Cinturato Winter has been superseded by the Pirelli Cinturato Winter 2, so buyers should check availability carefully.

GoodYear Efficientgrip Performance 2Across three shared tests, the GoodYear UltraGrip 9+ won every time, and the data supports why: superior wet braking, better rolling resistance, longer tread life, and a more consistent all-conditions performance profile. It is the stronger tyre for drivers who do a mix of roads — motorways, wet country roads, occasional snow — and want safety margins they can trust in every condition. The Pirelli Cinturato Winter is not a bad tyre — its snow cornering confidence is genuinely impressive and its cabin comfort earns consistent praise — but it is less efficient, wears faster, and lags behind on wet braking where it matters most. With the Cinturato Winter 2 now available as its successor, the original is increasingly a legacy option. For most buyers today, the UltraGrip 9+ is the sharper choice.
